I made a Fallout inspired RPG game in EXCEL

Story

It is the 145th year of the second age. Life in Mercer is unrecognisable to that which came earlier – The bombs saw to that. Humanity may never fully recover…
Adventure beckons once more, and you are ready to answer its call!

How To

Mercer is the home of a Fallout inspired adventure game

There are two key game components to understand to get maximum fun:

  1. Mapping and Questing
  2. Battling

Mapping and Questing

The ‘Map’ tab is the central hub of this game – where you and your party will seek to save Mercer from the latest threat. – You and your party are represented by the Red Circle

  •  Towns/Shelter (and quest locations) are in purple
  • Moveable land is in green (light green for plains, dark green for farmland)
  • You can move your party using the arrow buttons (CellsAZ2-BB6)
  •  if you are ever stuck – refer back to the quest log for clues, or head to the nearest town to see if that will help!

 Battle Mode

Note – If at any stage the battle mode seems too hard. Start a new campaign with ‘Disable Battle’ mode switched to yes, this will disable all battles and allow for peaceful adventuring/questing.

Battles can leave your party outnumbered – anywhere between 1 to 5 enemies will spawn to fight your party – so be prepared at all times!

Battles use a simplified version of DnD mechanics, with four features important to understand:

1. Initiative: The world of Mercer uses turn based battle mechanics. This means each creature takes it in turn to move and attack. The order of this is defined by an initiative dice roll, where the highest roll gets to go first. This order is set in the first round of combat and stays consistent throughout the battle

2. Range and Movement: Battles take place on a wide battle arena, where distance is important.   Each ceature has their own movement they can achieve each turn, as well as different ranges of attack. You can only attack a creature if you are within range.

Melee creatures for example can only attack when they are next to another creature, but ranged attacks can benefit from being at a distance Make sure to track the distance between your party and your enemy!

3. Hitting an Enemy : Once you are in range of attacking the enemy, we now need to see if your attack hits or not.     This hit roll is all based on armour class and randomly probability. If your roll falls below the enemy armour class, the attack will miss.

4. Damage Calculation: Each weapon and attack move has the capability of hitting a range of damage. This damage scales with your level Details on what dice and bonuses are added to your attack role are shown on the Character Stats screen (accessible via the map)  .

Consider Donating: All our games are free – and will remain free, but if you would like to contribute it would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Can you give me a “learner version”? I was simply amazed when I tried this game! I have a rudimentary D&D file for Dungeon Masters and I want to develop that. I never learned how to use Excel at school, I learned everything myself at my previous job. For my own use, if you had a version that I could learn from, I would be very grateful!

  2. Hi, I am a student of the University of Łódź, in one of our classes we have programming in VBA and as a final grade we have to do a project. The idea for such a game seems very cool, so I would like to use your help and create something similar. Is there any chance I could see the source code? Since the professor who conducts these classes is giga chill, he allowed us to take the code from the Internet. Of course, I would mention the original author in the project description. Kind regards

    • Unfortunately I am keeping the VBA password protected for this game. Some of my other games have open VBA codes – check out the horror one for example – hopefully you can use those in your studies.
      Best of luck

  3. How Excel specific is it? Some of us LibreOffice to avoid paying through the nose for Excel… would love to know if it works in that 🙂

  4. Unfortunately does not work in LibreOffice 😦 Cannot open it in Microsoft Excel since the Macros are blocked.

LibreOffice responds with the following error message:

BASIC runtime error.’423’Property or method not found: TopLeftCell.

Do you plan to add compatibility with LibreOffice ? 😦

  6. Is it just me or does anyone else lose the first battle every time? The damage only counts against the first enemy but the second enemy never loses any health. The combat continues until my team loses all health, then game over

    • reached LVL 10
    • got 4th quest in progress
    • every time i reach any town i got `run-time error :13` – type mishmash
    • can’t debug (code is password protected)…

    two questions:

    1. how to fix it
    2. is there any external file for saving my progress (code update comes with new file, my progress don’t ;P )

  8. There’s an error in the levelling system. Once the player reaches level 10, the quest will not progress as you encounter an error the moment you arrive at any checkpoint.

  9. After receiving quest to return home I get error message whenever I enter any city 😦

    Run-time error ’13’
    Type mismatch

Is it because there are no more quests? Or any other issue ? 😦

    • I am unable to recreate this error on my side – sorry but unable to know what is driving this!
Is this at the end of the game – after both overseas talk? If so there any no more quests after you return home..
