Match Engine

Match results are generated using a random normal distribution of results. If two teams are equal in strength the most common outcome will be a draw.

Results are skewed from a random normal distribution of results due to 1) home advantage driving a small skew towards the home team and 2) relative strength of tactic/squad selection (largest skew). This is the biggest area where your management decisions will impact!

Missing Elements

The big two missing elements are injuries and a proper transfer/ contract economy. The issue with injuries wasn’t the injuries themselves, but having a code or logic for the AI to deal with injuries was not something I could get my head around. With the transfer/ player economy to be frank I just had no idea where to start.

Football Manager 2025

I personally cant wait for FM25 to come out for real – the brave new world we are entering into with Unity and graphics is exciting. But in the meantime, why not play a true spreadsheet simulator?

Common Issues:

There is a common issue when running the game in EXCEL in languages other than english – where results are not being populated in a match week, nor being written into the match results tab. This is because different languages treat decimal places differently.

The fix is below:

You need to active the “developer Tab” in Excel first. The Developer tab isn’t displayed by default, but you can add it to the ribbon. On the File tab, go to Options > Customize Ribbon. Under Customize the Ribbon and under Main Tabs, select the Developer check box.

You will then be able to see this Tab and in this tab click the “Macros” button. In this open the macro named “generaterandompercentages” to edit it and change in the lines 0.00 to 0,00.

Save the macro, save the .xlsm (excel file) and start a new save.

Should work now.

  1. Looks really good, AFC Wimbledon start with a squad of 19 and a budget of 50,000 their are no players for 50,000 or under am i missing something or should i wait for your season video so i can work out what im doing wrong.

    • Hi Paul – just checking your on the v1.2?
      For the Transfer system its a player-swap so you will have to ‘sell’ a player if you want to ‘buy’ a player. Just checking in v1.2 the player values are ~18m for each player in the Wimbledon squad so theres about ~500 players you can ‘buy’ at the start of the game.

      The ony way to build the squad size is via youth recruitment at the end of the season – I know its quite limiting…

      • Ah Apologies – I get the error your running into – the game is looking to check that you have 20 players selected in match day squad (which is impossible given the 19 players). This was a unique bug for AFC Wimbledon, Bristol and Salford only.
        Will fix in the next 5 mins and release a v1.3 – thanks for picking this up!

  2. Hey mate, saw your 1st video about this game on my recommended and decided to give it a try, but unfortunately, I’ve been getting a really annoying error: none of the match results show up on the notification and the league tables do not update.

    I genuinely can’t say what is cause of the issue and can affirm that I didn’t alter anything important for the functioning of the game, as well for the fact that I don’t have any access to the developer tab.

    At the end of the day, it might be a problem caused on my side and not something you did wrong, so please don’t see this as a negative.

    • Hi – thanks for trying to play. Some people have been getting this odd error, but unfortunately I cannot recreate it.
      Can you try saving a new version of the game (from within excel). Closing excel and opening it – it may be a security setting that is stopping this from happening and having your pc as the ‘owner’ of the file may help.
      Can you also try with a few different teams.

      Also just for my info are you on pc/ Mac? What version of excel are you on?

      • I was playing the 1.4 version and did try clolsing and opening, but now I have to check with the 1.5 version rn, so the next paragraph will be my real response. (I’m on pc and version 2411 for Excel.

        The Leeds United Test (I’m writing this in “real time”):

        I’m going to take a different team, as I first used West Bromwich Albion but now, I’ve switched to Leeds United and will make 1 random transfer alongside with a random line-up, because the problem we have to tackle is in regards the results update.

        I got Samuel Umtiti and set up the amazing and trusty 4-4-2! I’m going to click on the “Next Match” button and let’s hope for the best.

        It happened again, no results and no table updates, BUT I think I have a hypothesis for this is happening and WILL test it out. I was reading the comments and saw a Danish guy said that he altered one of the macros with a simple substitution – replacing ‘0.00,’ with ‘0,00’ – and I figured “hey, I’m Brazilian (thus I have Brazilian Excel) and I don’t use ‘.’ in the place of ‘,’ maybe that’s the problem!”, so that is what I’m gonna do, if I figure out how to get to the place he got…

        The Wolverhampton Test (I’m writing this in “real time”):

        As before, I’m going to take a different team, and this time it will be Wolverhampton and will make all the correct steps to download it and make sure the macros are enabled, the main focus now is to see where they are located and where should I alter the aforementioned ‘.’ with a ‘,’ , here we go!

        Ok so just opened the excel and enabled macros, now I just got to see the view tab, then go to macro and view the macros, I’ll check one by one to be sure if there aren’t any other ‘.’ that should be replaced with ‘,’ , ya know?

        Oh man, there is so much stuff here, to be totally clear I barely know how to use excel, especially stuff like macros but I’ll try my best to find and fix my game.

        Found the “0.00” and changed it to “0,00”, let’s hope that’s enough. I also can’t forget that I’ll do the same thing as last time, I’ll put a random line-up, get 1 random transfer and then proceed with the game, agora é hora da verdade.

        I’ve chosen the 4-4-2, signed with Álex Grimaldo while saying goodbye to Sam Johnstone and now we’ll see if it works…

        AND GET IN THERE LADS, the problem really was the “0.00”! Honestly something so silly as a language/numerical difference between countries would’ve never gone through my mind as a reason if it weren’t jarql (the danish guy in question) for mentioning it! I’m so happy it now works! Cmon!

        I’m got to apologize to you for such a late response, it’s been wild times for me since these past weeks and just now I got time to check on your helpful response, so sorry for answering something so crucial and giving feedback so late to ya… on the other hand I’m happy that we figured it out! I’ll create an account next time I post here and will try to keep giving out some feedback to you, since FM is not really available in my country (unless if you do some gambiarras) and always wanted to try it out I’m really thankful for you to do an version of it in Excel, so I figured that the best way I could retribute is to give you feedback whenever I can.

        Another thing I wanted to say was that I wonder if anybody has ever thought of making any sort of change on the teams that are available on the game, since being the football loving Brazilian that I am, I’ve been wondering if there was some way to alter the teams and competition to put Brazilian teams, even if it’s only the 4 main divisions without the many complicated rules that inflict the national levels (especially the fourth division).

    • A few things for you to confirm – who have you tried playing with, what version of excel are you on, pc or Mac.
      A few things for you to try – save a new version of the excel. Close it and open it. Try with a team in each different league.

  4. [Bug Report]

    Background: I tried using this spreadsheet after watching Zealand video. I chose Walsall as my club.

    Where: “Selection and Tactics” at L37:M47 (Hidden values for tactic calculation)

    What is causing the error: You forgot to change the column index number, so no matter the tactic, the 10 outfield players are always using their attack value for tactic calculations.

    Fix: For the formulas in column L, change the column index numbers to 18. For the formulas in column M, change the column index numbers to 19.

  5. [Feature Suggestion]

    Name: Substitute verification checks

    Type: Back End

    Details: If a player is a substitute, the game doesn’t check whether that player is in the starting 11 or already in another substitute. It would be nice to get an error like you already do for starting 11 duplicates. Not sure what the player dev impact is of being listed twice (or more) on the bench or being in the starting 11 and on the bench at the same time.

    • Shouldn’t impact player development – as it cycles by player not by position.
      I had this feature in earlier versions, but removed it as it had issues when teams had smaller squad sizes.

  6. [Bug Report]

    Where: ‘Team Hub’ N25:27 (win column for teams 22-24)

    What: The column number in the formulas change from ‘6’ to ‘7’ -> ‘8’ -> ‘9’. This causes the win totals for these teams to be displayed incorrectly.

  7. Goalkeepers seem to develop way too quickly. My starting goalkeeper went from 11.5 to 16.3 in one season in League 2. He’s gone from being being about the 270th best goalkeeper in the database to the undisputed best-in-the-world (the second best player at the end of the season was Marc-André ter Stegen who had 15.1 goalkeeping).

    I think the goalkeeping attribute improves at the same rate as other attributes, but it had a disproportional impact due to the goalkeeper position only getting it’s rating from one attribute (goalkeeping).

    Using this information, I’m going to fill my bench with goalkeepers and sell them off for massive profit at the end of next season.

    • Scratch that, we still had a few weeks left. He got to 17.0 by week 62 (Marc-André ter Stegen got to 15.2). I think the training focus is just OP in general. As Walsall, I was able to get my squad to a total skill level higher than everyone with the exception on Man City. By week 62 my team had a total skill level of 61.52% (Man City had 61.84%). Granted, I didn’t even promote due my reputation being too low.

  8. I seeing a bug where some regens (database wide + both outfield and infield) will generate with over 20 Goalkeeping. Most I’ve seen is a Goalkeeping attribute at 52!

      What language of excel are you playing in?

      Sometimes the results don’t work because of language issues with excel.

  11. [Bug Report]

    Where: The “Regen” feature

    What: Regen have massive GK attributes

    Explanation: Regens sometimes have over 20 goalkeeping. This can be as mild as 21 goalkeeping to over 100 goalkeeping.

    Why: The way attributes are distributed just dumps the remaining CA of a player into their goalkeeping attribute. This means, if a player rolls low for the 11 outfield attributes, it will get a super high goalkeeping attribute.

    Explanation: Whenever you get your youth intake you get a pop-up that tells you your prospect’s name, age, nationality, and CA. The CA on this pop-up never matches the actual CA of a player on ‘Live Player Data’. For outfield players, most of the time it’s by a little bit. For goalkeepers, it’s by a lot. (From now on, I will refer to the CA in the pop-up as PUCA and the real CA as RCA)

    Why: The RCA of a player is calculated based on either the 11 outfield attributes or the goalkeeping attribute. The PUCA of player being generated is split between these 12 attributes regardless of player position. This means, for outfielders, their RCA (ORCA) is =PUCA-Goalkeeping_Attribute. For goalkeepers, their RCA (GKRCA) is =10(PUCA-ORCA).

    As you might imagine, this can get quite silly. I see I’ve gotten a 120 PUCA GK, but when I look at him, he only has 1 goalkeeping. The sum of his outfield attributes is equal to 119 RCA. So, in reality, his GKRCA is 10. I have gotten another 120 PUCA in my intake. This time, he is an outfield player. Too bad-his ORCA is 49. He has just rolled terribly on his outfield attributes and the rest got dumped into goalkeeping. This means he has 71 goalkeeping, making his GKRCA (if he was one) 710.

      I just released a version 1.7 of the game that fixes both Player Development caps and More realistic Youth Recruitment. (Best Youth GK that can spawn is now capped with a GK skill of 12 – therefore GKCA of 120).

  14. I started with a team (Swindon Town) on the bottom of League 2 and have now promoted myself to the Championship. However I have only received a repudiation boost that has seen me get to a midtable league 1 team making transfers difficult. In addition there are now after 5 seasons 14 teams that now have 100% repudiation (all premier League teams). Can you make the reputation more dynamic where teams can get reputation boosts relative to the league that they are in in addition to having teams lose reputation when they get worse?

  15. Played through Season 1 as Newport and am loving it. A few quick questions if that’s ok?

    (1) Is there a way of donating towards this? Feel you deserve a financial thankyou for this amazing thing you’ve made.

    (2) What stats contribute towards the FWD/MID/DEF/GK stats respectively? Want to make sure I’m training players effectively.

    (3) Do only the above stats matter for those positions? Have lots of NewGens with 1 for physicals who are supposedly the best player for their position.

    (4) Does reputation factor in determining match results? My season 2 team seems ridiculous on paper (Doku as my 3rd best striker, Garnacho on the bench in league 1), but results don’t seem to match.

    • Hi Paul – glad you are enjoying!
      1) please don’t worry about this. Playing and enjoying is the most important thing. The best way to support is just to watch all my videos!
      2) The easiest way to see these is to look at the team selection/ tactics tab and to look at the att/mid/def stats for each player. If you click on the excel formula you will see highlighted attributes that impact these respectively.
      3) these should be the only thing that impact results, hopefully no bugs in the best in position logic!
      4) reputation does impact match results, however reputation is slow to build (looks at last 5 seasons of results)

        (1) I was wondering why shooting was a factor for defenders?

        (2) I presume that goalkeeping is the only factor for goalies?

        (3) Reputation being a factor explains my struggles in league 1. Hopefully I can stay in the league and work on my rep. Makes it a longer-term game than I was expecting.

      • I can understand you like defenders scoring goals, only weird thing is that one of my attackers is the top defender because he is allround and has very good shooting.

        Whitout shouting in the defending skills the defender can still shoot, but doesn’t effect the def rating. Which would be more realistic I think.

        I changed the formula to try it out and now my defenders are the best defenders I have instead of attackers and midfielders.

      • Defending with shooting feel strange, because the defender still has it’s shooting ability even if it’s not counting for the defensive percentage.

        Now one of my best strikers is also the top defender. Also a few midfielders are in the DEF top 5. I took shooting out and now my top defenders are really defenders, and the can still shoot? Only not counted as a defensive skill. Feels more realistic than having my left winger as my top defender.

  17. Not sure what I’m doing wrong, but there are never any results visible when I progress to next match. The popup is shown but no results listed. I downloaded the file again and tried another save, but still no results.

  18. First of all, congratulations! The work you did is incredible. Unfortunately, for me, the cups are not working. In the cup fixtures, a pop-up appears saying “Invalid or missing number for EFL CUP in Cup Fixtures tab!” and the same happens for the FA Cup.

  19. dear bro, as a common FM player, I really impressed with this type of FM. totally unbelievable someone using excel to create FM with a nice UI and database. seeing this excel-game makes me wonder that my excel skill is nothing compared to you lol. if I may, since there are a lot of QnA with multiple replies in each questions, could you resume it in FAQ section in this page? so common problem could be identified by the user. by the way, thank you for making this excel game, I now could play game in the office without the boss knowing I am gaming 😀

  20. Hi. I experienced very high developments to my goalkeepers in squad.

    I inspected your live player data sheet and found a bug.

    Every player has Potential and Ability – but your Development Flag doesnt compare this values to determine if the player should stop developing. This lead to my GK (in league 2) having 165 ability score while his potential should be capped at 101.

    the fix should be just changing Development Flag formula to check =PotencialScore>AbilityScore but i dont know what you intended to be fair ^^

    i changed it in my spreadsheet that way and game is mire balanced.

    I started a save earlier today and made it through the first season wihtout encountering any bugs or issues; well done, I’m really enjoying it so far.

    Having now started season 2, after the reasults popups are shown each week, I get another pop-up titled “Development Code Errors” with “The following errors were found: – Player not found: Alejandro Garnacho – Player not found: Altay Bayindir” and so on for all squad members. Is this a known issue?

    1. In DevelopmentCode marco you consider 10000 players in LivePlayerData tab. After ~10 seasons players in LivePlayerData exceed 100000 and macro returns an error: https://prnt.sc/Rl6y-W566zmr

    2. Why you consider “Shooting” in Defenders score (Tab Selection and Tactics)? I think it should be removed.

    3. I feel Team Reputation is much more important than team Def, Mid and Att scores when generating match results. A team with 100% rating and 10% Reputation looses many of the matches. Please check.

      If i push through an update ill look at your 1) issue.
      2) I like defenders that score goal, particulalry attacking WBs and Fbs – hence why shooting is one of the stats included.
      3) Reputation and Team skill are equally weighted in driving results. Reputation should improve season on season with performance to try to reflect slow builds of team.

  22. First of all lots of respect for the amazing job you did, this is fantastic!

    I started playing with West Ham today. Right now I am in match week 19. I have seen some matched being played, but all without results. Every league or cup table is still like the start. I got multiple messages saying roundnumbers are missing for EFL CUP.

    I hope it’s easy to fix, looking forward to play your game.

    Bug report ( i don’t see this mentioned on other comments)

    On the team selection page, for Best in Position, formula returns N/A where two players share same rating for given position, in my save it’s Danilo and Lewis O’Brien in Nottingham Forrest.

    Also does Outfield position is been used anywhere in the macros, or i can rename positions to resemble the ones from FM? It would be easier to connect players to position in tactic.
